After India's disappointing defeat in the Test series, the onus is on their one-day team to ensure they grab a slice of the pie before the tour of Sri Lanka ends. The signs are that it will not be easy, as they will be up against the spin duo of Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis, bowlers who have completely dominated India over the last couple of months. Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag were the most successful batsmen in the Tests, and they hold the key to ensuring that Mahendra Singh Dhoni wins his first ODIs series as captain in Sri Lanka.

After the high of the Commonwealth Bank Series title in Australia, India were not at their best in the Kitply Cup and Asia Cup, a fact Dhoni has readily admitted. In the finals of both tournaments, India's main men didn't step up when the pressure was on. They lost the Kitply Cup final by 25 runs and the Asia Cup final by 100 runs. The pressure was created by the bowlers conceding over 300, and the batsmen failed to handle a stiff asking rate in a big match.

The bowling has been a worry for India in the past, which is probably why Dhoni indicated India were looking at playing five bowlers in the first ODI in Dambulla. The ground also favours spin, which means India will play both Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha. If Sanath Jayasuriya gets off to a start, these two spinners will have a huge role to play: the Asia Cup final showed that restricting Jayasuriya in the early overs was possible, but once he got his eye in he was unstoppable. With Harbhajan not having played one-day cricket since March 2008 and Ojha just three matches old, India might still need the services of Yuvraj Singh and Virender Sehwag despite playing five specialist bowlers.

Like the last two tournaments India's batting is reliant on a few batsmen with limited experience. Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma have played 68 ODIs between them, and they have been the main candidates to bat at No. 3. Part of Dhoni's method of finding stability has been to experiment at the No. 3 and No. 6 slots: India have used Raina, Sharma and Yuvraj Singh at one-down in the last two tournaments, but Raina has scored a couple of fifties at that slot and, barring a major loss of form, will be batting at that position in this series.

India missed the big names in the Asia Cup, but Dhoni is a firm believer in experimenting to find the right combination. "If you have players with more then 250 ODIs to their credit I don't think that makes a lot of difference," he said. "After 100 ODIs you have a sense of what's required. Its not like we will really miss some of the players but it will show up in how the guys coming up perform and adapt to the conditions."

India can take confidence from the win in the warm-up match against a Sri Lankan XI side comprising ten international players, but this is a whole new ball game. In the Test series, Mendis averaged 22.80 against India's four famed middle-order batsmen, with ten wickets, while Muralitharan conceded only 26.25 for each of his eight wickets against them. None of those players are in the ODI squad, but there is nothing to suggest that their replacements will find it any easier.

The performances of India's openers, therefore, take on added importance because they played Mendis well in the Tests. Gambhir was the most consistent batsman in the Tests, blending exceptional footwork with positive strokeplay. Sehwag handled Mendis extremely well in Galle, even hitting him out of the attack at one stage.

"In any form of cricket the start is very important but that doesn't mean all the pressure is on the openers to give you a good start," said Dhoni. "Sehwag is the sort who takes a bit of risk at times. Whenever he gets us that start we have a fair chance of winning. He's in very good nick, so is Gambhir. Both played well in the Tests so they have some added responsibility on them."

Added responsibility or not, India have reason to worry about how their batsmen will handle Mendis, who ran rings around them in the Asia Cup final. Dhoni chose not to admit it, but Sri Lanka have a distinct psychological hold over India through Mendis.

On a pitch and in a series where the fast bowlers have only been making up the numbers, a hostile and quick Ishant Sharma helped India seal an incredible comeback after they had slumped to their third-worst defeat ever in the first Test.

In the first session of the day, Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis had made sure India didn't take their lead into the realms of the impregnable, but with Ishant bowling the way he did, the target of 307 stayed secure. Ishant got good support from Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh; the latter finished with his fifth ten-wicket haul.

Sri Lanka were attacked from a quarter they would have least expected hostilities from, and after having done well playing catch-up throughout the match, they finally fell short. The match was much closer than the 170-run margin indicated.

Ishant was accurate, he hit the bat hard, gave Dinesh Karthik some more difficulties behind the wicket, and most importantly, kept producing his special delivery repeatedly: the one that holds its line after having pitched on a length.

Ishant began with a wicket with the third ball he bowled, sending down a perfect right-armer's ball to a left-hander, pitching it around leg and moving it away, making Malinda Warnapura play and edge. Zaheer, in the next over, produced a legcutter for Sangakkara similar to the one he did in the first Test, with similar results. And in his next over, Ishant got the biggest wicket of them all for India - Mahela Jayawardene, who looked to counterattack and cut straight to gully, where Rahul Dravid held on to a sharp chance. Dravid was exuberant at having taken the catch - he had dropped Michael Vandort in the first over, and had also been pushed out of the cordon.

Ishant and Zaheer then tightened the screws. Ishant, in particular, seemed to be bowling on a different pitch from the one that had been on display on the four previous days. At one point, the preceding 12.3 overs had cost India 11 runs and featured two huge lbw shouts, one catch off a no-ball, and most importantly, robust fast bowling. Harbhajan took advantage of that period, and trapped Vandort with an arm-ball in his first over.

But there was one final twist left in the match, and Ishant it was who pulled India out of a threatening situation. Thilan Samaraweera and Tillakaratne Dilshan had put together a swift 76-run stand, pulling Sri Lanka out of the shell they had played themselves into. Dilshan, in particular, hustled the bowling, briefly changing the texture of the game.

Ishant came up with a special over after tea, bowling at high pace, extracting extra bounce, and getting the ball to hold its line. After having beaten Dilshan twice, he finally got him to edge one, and it was all downhill for Sri Lanka after that.

Harbhajan took control of the situation then; both lower orders have, on this pitch, been hard pressed against quality spin bowling. Samaraweera, who scored a resolute half-century, could not do much about what happened at the other end. The last five wickets fell for 23 runs, Harbhajan taking three of them. When he got Mendis, he completed his ten-for, and a successful redemption after his recent misadventures.

Rain Bad news. Overnight heavy rain which carried on in the morning as well and it's still drizzling out there. It's monsoon season in Sri Lanka and the ground staff have come prepared. 90% of the ground is covered. They are regularly removing water from the middle, even with rain around, to stop the water from sweeping in through the covers like a tea bag. So at the moment it is just a drizzle and probably the ground staff will need 90 minutes to clear the covers. Having said that, chances of play starting before lunch looks bleak.

The Indian Test team has been in form over the last couple of years but the task before them over the next three weeks is a huge one. Sri Lanka are a formidable team at home - since India's last tour in 2001, the Sri Lankans have won 11 out of 14 series, losing only to Australia and Pakistan, and drawing a two-match series against New Zealand. cricket

It's been seven years since India's last Test series here, but the settled nature of both teams means many of the protagonists are the same. A couple of Indians who missed out in 2001 could have huge roles to play this time: Anil Kumble is the leader of the team and the bowling attack, while Sachin Tendulkar continues to be the key man in the middle order and is within touching distance of becoming the highest run-scorer in Test cricket.

Sri Lanka's successes at home have largely been built around the simple strategy of steady run-accumulation and a relentless diet of high-quality spin bowling. They have the resources for both in this series: the opening pair is inexperienced, but Sri Lanka have plenty of class in the middle order, while Ajantha Mendis lends a touch of mystery to their spin attack.

Watch out for
Muttiah Muralitharan: The focus has been exclusively on Mendis throughout the build-up to the Test, but Muralitharan will probably be the bigger threat, especially at a ground where he has taken 20% of all his Test wickets. In 22 matches, he has a rich tally of 149 wickets here at slightly more than 21 apiece. Most of the Indians are fairly adept players of spin, but that didn't stop Murali from taking 11 wickets at this ground the last time the two teams met.cricket

Gautam Gambhir: He has made a regular spot for himself in the shorter versions, but this is Gambhir's chance to make the Test opener's spot his own as well. His Test career has been more stop than start so far, but these might be the best conditions for him to make his mark: the bounce shouldn't bother him too much, while he has given enough indications in the past that he is adept at tackling high-quality spin.

With Lasith Malinga, Dilhara Fernando and Farveez Maharoof all unavailable, the tussle for Chaminda Vaas' new-ball partner is between Thilan Thushara and Nuwan Kulasekara.
